Adversity, Trauma and Resilience in Schools

The Bradford ATR programme has a focus on prevention, early intervention, and mitigating the effects of adversity and trauma from preconception throughout a person’s life.

We know that babies, children and young people who experience adversity and trauma are at high risk of poor health and wellbeing. We also know that adults who face multiple disadvantages as a result of adversity and trauma are also at risk of poor health and wellbeing outcomes. The ATR programme is designed to drive the districts collective ambitions of working together to prevent adversity and trauma and to mitigate the existing harm across the lifespan; helping people who live and work in Bradford to understand the latest thinking around trauma, brain development, adverse childhood experiences and neuroscience research.

Our vision is to work in partnership with people with lived experience and colleagues from diverse sectors and organisations to ensure Bradford District is both trauma-informed and responsive.

In 2018 Better Start Bradford, Bradford Council and Bradford District and City CCG brought partners together to consider the developing work on Adverse Childhood Experiences across partner organisations and a hub was established to share good practice and knowledge. In 2019, a health needs assessment was completed by Public Health acknowledging that adversity and resulting trauma is the single greatest unaddressed public health threat facing our nation today. The commitment was made to delivering on an Adversity, Trauma and Resilience (ATR) programme in Bradford, launched in 2021 with a new strategy for 2024-2027, Bradford (in line with wider West Yorkshire ambitions) hopes to become trauma-informed by 2030.
