Kenneth proves it’s never too late to quit smoking!

Kenneth was just 18 when he started smoking in 1989, shortly after losing his dad to lung cancer. At the time, he believed he could stop whenever he wanted. Like many people, he never imagined that “just for now” would turn into 37 years of smoking.

It wasn’t until last year, after losing a close friend aged just 53 to lung cancer, that Kenneth began to seriously think about quitting. Seeing history repeat itself was a turning point. This time, he knew he had to make a change.

Remarkably, this was Kenneth’s first ever attempt to quit. He reached out to the Living Well Stop Smoking Service and was supported by a dedicated personal quit advisor from the very beginning. After an initial conversation about his smoking history, Kenneth was contacted again to plan the next steps.

“One thing that really made the difference,” Kenneth says, “was when my advisor stressed how important it was to set a proper quit date. Once I did that, I felt determined to see it through.”

The regular follow‑up calls played a huge role in keeping him focused and motivated. Knowing someone was there to support him helped Kenneth stay on track during challenging moments. The encouragement worked so well that he even inspired a friend to join the programme and start their own quit journey!

Since quitting smoking, Kenneth has noticed positive changes he never expected.

“I feel so much healthier,” he says. “I’m still discovering improvements in my body. My circulation has improved, and I’ve even noticed that my gums are healthier.”

Kenneth’s journey shows that no matter how long you’ve been smoking, or how many times you’ve told yourself it’s too late, quitting is always possible. With the right support, determination and a clear quit date, life after smoking can feel healthier, brighter and worth it.

Kenneth’s story is a powerful reminder that no matter how long you’ve been smoking, or how many times you’ve told yourself it’s too late, quitting is always possible with the right support.
