Wellbeing - Healthy minds at home
Everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable at home.
However, local issues like noise nuisance can affect your mental wellbeing.
These issues can cause stress, disturb sleep, reduce feelings of safety and impact how you feel about where you live. This page offers practical information on the support that is available.
Empty homes
Empty homes can affect communities by attracting vandalism, fly‑tipping, squatting and anti‑social behaviour, and can cause anxiety for nearby residents.
The council can offer advice and, if needed, take action to deal with problems linked to empty homes. If you own an empty property or want to report one, please click the link above. Please report issues as soon as possible rather than waiting.
Serious property conditions
A home may be classed as “filthy or verminous” if it has large amounts of food waste, faeces, dirty clothing or furniture, or is infested with rats, mice, insects or parasites at any stage of their life cycle. These conditions can make the home hard to access and create serious health and fire risks for both residents and neighbours.
For advice, contact the Housing Standards Team at CHPenquiries@bradford.gov.uk or call 01274 434520.
Noise nuisance
Ongoing or loud noise can cause stress, poor mental health and sleep problems. The council can investigate issues such as long or late DIY work, constant dog barking, noisy businesses, or loud music or TV. You will need to keep a record of when the noise happens to help show patterns and impact.
Noise may be classed as a statutory nuisance if it is frequent, ongoing and seriously affects your use or enjoyment of your home. In these cases, the council can take action, including issuing a notice to reduce or stop the noise.
Problem bonfires
Smoke from bonfires adds to air pollution and can worsen conditions like asthma and COPD. Burning materials such as plastics, painted wood or treated wood can release harmful chemicals, some of which can cause cancer.
You can report ongoing bonfire problems to the council with the link above. Environmental Health can investigate and may issue an abatement notice if the smoke is a statutory nuisance.
Engine idling and anti-social driving
Leaving your engine running when your car isn’t moving creates unnecessary air pollution, which can irritate the lungs and worsen conditions like asthma, heart and lung disease. Even a few minutes of idling increases pollution, wastes fuel, causes engine wear and adds noise.
To help protect health, save money and reduce pollution, switch off your engine when parked, waiting, or stuck in traffic.
