BEEP Case Study

Ian Mitchell, 61 from Bierley

After Ian completed his cardiac rehab programme, he realised he wasn’t really doing any physical activity – apart from walking his dog. When visiting his GP for a health check, he noticed a banner about the BEEP service and after being told his weight had crept up to 94kg it spurred him on to ask for a referral.

A consultation with BEEP exercise referral officer Ibrahim was booked for Ian and between them they came up with a tailored exercise plan that suited Ian’s needs.

Ian said: “I was very impressed with the detail Ibrahim went through with me. It helped me to feel a lot more confident and relaxed about going ahead with an exercise plan. Having a history of cardiac complications, I was nervous about exercise and going into this type of environment. But when we spoke about the support available through BEEP I felt settled and more confident ready to start my journey.

“My BEEP journey started in July 2024 when I was referred to Sedbergh Leisure centre. I started going there regularly 3 to 4 times a week. 12-months on, I feel so much better in my health and wellbeing by becoming more active.  I’ve dropped down from 94kg to 74kg which I’m really happy about – I now feel the fittest I have felt in years!

“Being part of the BEEP program has been a massive help to me, getting back on track with my health both physically and mentally. As well as the health benefits I’ve gained lots of new friends in the facility, which really helped to encourage and motivate me to continue going regularly. All the staff in the centre are so helpful and friendly.

“I would definitely recommend everyone to get more physically active with help from the BEEP scheme. Whether it’s walking, swimming, gym work, whatever works for you, these guys will support you throughout the whole journey”.
