After a routine review with his GP, Paul was advised he would need medication to manage his blood pressure. His BMI measured 32 and there were concerns about visceral fat around his waist, as well as overall heart health.
“It was a bit of a wakeup call,” Paul admits. “I didn’t feel terrible, But I knew I wasn’t where I should be. Keeping up with my lively grandson was a struggle, I was breathless walking up stairs and my trousers definitely hadn’t shrunk in the wash – they just didn’t fit anymore.
“You ignore it for quite a while, putting feeling a bit rubbish down to age and thinking you’ll get round to getting fitter and healthier at some point…but never actually committing to it.”
More than anything, Paul says he felt he was ageing faster than he wanted to.
“I know you can’t stop ageing, but I wanted to slow it down.”
Taking the first step
Paul was referred to the BEEP (Bradford Encouraging Exercise in People) service, where he had a nurse assessment before being introduced to Vicky at Sedbergh Leisure Centre.
“That’s really where the journey began,” he says. “At the time every day activities were becoming more difficult”
Building confidence and momentum
Through the BEEP Programme (a free physical activity referral service that encourages people to become active, with a 52 week support programme) Paul began attending sessions regularly, building his strength, confidence and fitness step by step.
“What made the difference was the regular accountability and encouragement,” he explains. “There was always someone to ask if I wasn’t sure about something, and that really helped keep me on track.”
Paul also kept a log of his progress which helped him to stay motivated seeing the small but definite improvements over time.
“The results were slow at first, but writing things down helped me stay patient. I could see I was building a good foundation, and that made it easier to prioritise going to the gym.”
A new lease of life
Today, Paul says he feels like a completely different person. “I feel more alert, more confident – just better in myself.” And the benefits go beyond physical health. Paul says, “Being more active has helped me mentally too. You feel brighter, more positive.” Best of all he’s back to doing what matters most. “I can keep up with the toddler now! Let’s just say swings and roundabouts are a lot more fun when you’re not needing to sit down afterwards!”
A message for others
For anyone feeling unsure about starting their own journey, Paul has a simple message: “Don’t be afraid of going to the gym or trying a class. Everyone is super friendly and helpful – you’re not on your own. Just take that first step and you might be surprised how quickly things start to change.”
