After lockdown and living in lounge wear, Frances felt she had become a bit of a ‘couch potato’ having gained weight through being inactive.
Frances said: “I felt lethargic, my clothes didn’t fit and I didn’t feel great about myself. Years ago, I lost weight with Slimming World, but this time it wasn’t an option, money was tight as I wasn’t working, looking after my 90 year old mum who had a fall”.
Frances visited a local event where she met the Living Well team and found out about the free services available for people living in Bradford district. She was particularly interested to learn about the free offer that gives people with a BMI of 25 or more, access to join a weight management group.
Frances said: “It was really easy to apply, I chose Slimming World and lost weight, slowly but surely. I loved the motivating sessions and the group I went to in Allerton was so friendly and supportive. I wouldn’t have been able to join without the free sessions at the time – so it was a real boost!
“I also Joined the Dance On Group at Kirkgate Studio. It’s cheaper than most classes and it’s inclusive and fun. We dance to Dolly Parton, Bhangra and Tina Turner! As well as getting fitter it’s a real ‘feel good’ class and it’s boosted my confidence and wellbeing.
“I started going to Heather Yoga in Shipley. There is a fantastic community class where you can pay as you feel. It’s an amazing class and as well as finding I’m a lot more flexible – I always feel more relaxed and present! I had a shoulder injury from helping lift my mum after her fall and the physical activity has got my range of movement back. By doing more exercise and losing weight, I feel fitter at sixty than I did at fifty!
“I would say to anyone, just start! Join a group and do something you enjoy. I’m not keen on the gym, but l Iove the dance and yoga classes that keep me active.
“Joining Slimming World with the free vouchers is so helpful – seeing other people lose weight and sharing tips and ideas makes it much easier than doing it on your own!
“I feel so much better and more confident in myself – so if anyone is not happy and feeling unhappy about their weight, it’s so supportive to join a group. My living Well have made it easy and anyone can just get started!
“You could be feeling so different after just 12 weeks. I feel more energised, I sleep better and my confidence has increased. I’ve become a regular at the yoga and dance classes and really look forward to going! I’d encourage anyone else feeling like I did, to find out what’s available and get started!
