Every action, no matter how small, is important. We can all work together in a co-ordinated way to improve the food system, mouthful by mouthful.

We want you to become an integral part of this strategy and partnership and to help contribute towards improving the food system in the district. We all play a role in influencing the health of people that live, work and play in the Bradford district.

  • Support your local foodbank – volunteer or donate quality, in-date surplus food

3) Grow your own food

  • Have a go at growing your own food at home – in your garden, in pots, or grow bags
  • Visit ‘Grow Bradford for local support and advice
  • Grow salad leaves or herbs on a windowsill if you have no outdoor space
  • Learn basic growing skills – online, in a book or ask someone you know
  • Access opportunities for growing in your local area– join a Growing Group or volunteer
  • Create opportunities for growing in your area – set up a growing group, share your knowledge and expertise and support others to grow their own
  • Sign up for an allotment

4) Help create a sustainable food system 

*What is a sustainable food system? – One that protects biodiversity and reduces our impact on the climate. Helping contribute towards tackling the climate emergency and improving the quality and impact of the food that we eat.

Eat more plant based foods

  • Try different vegetables or use sweet potato for a change
  • Fill your plate with fresh, seasonal vegetables or salads

  • Eat more nuts, seeds, lentils and beans

Eat less meat

  • Plan to have one or more meat free days in the week
  • To reduce the portions of meat you serve especially beef and lamb, why not start by replacing half of the meat in dishes like chilli, curries or casseroles with lentils, soya mince or beans

  • Get involved with Share Your Spare if you have spare fruit and vegetables from your allotment or garden.  You can give it to feeding projects (foodbanks, low-cost markets or community meals) helping people across Bradford who need a bit of help getting healthy, affordable food.
