Exercise safely with long term conditions​​​​​​​

Do you have a long term health condition? If you do you might have questions about exercising. How often can you exercise? Which exercises are safe?

Even with a long term health condition, exercise can have important health benefits. However, it's important to talk to a health professional or your doctor before starting anything new. They can give you advice on exercising safely and may tell you about activities available in your local area.

What is BEEP and who is it for?

Bradford Encouraging Exercise in People (BEEP) is a physical activity referral service that encourages and supports people to become more active more often.

BEEP is a great way for people with long term health conditions to increase physical activity levels and improve their health.

The BEEP team will complete a health assessment and you will be signposted towards exercise options that best suit you. You may also be offered some discounted activities.

To be referred you must:

  • Be 16 years or over
  • Be currently inactive
  • Have a long term medical or mental health condition and/or a BMI above 25

How do I get a referral?

Ask at your local GP practice for a referral to the BEEP service. Your GP, nurse or any other health care professional can complete a referral form for you.

Home exercises

Gentle exercises to help improve  mobility and prevent falls

Don't worry if you've not done much for a while – these  exercises are gentle and easy to follow. If you have a long term health condition, you may need to speak to your GP or health professional before starting anything new.
