“Turning activism into action” on #OneHealthDay

Monday 3 November saw the second Bradford food symposium, two years since the launch of the districts ‘good food strategy’.

The event brought the Sustainable Food Partnership back together to learn, share, and celebrate. It was also a chance to highlight how food can help tackle big global health problems by bringing together different areas of expertise including health, sustainability, culture, and policy all at once.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the workshop presenters who helped bring to life various parts of the strategy, including food insecurity, climate change and sustainability, food growing and healthy eating.

Councillor Susan Fricker the partnership chair, bought to life the success of the partnership over the last few years, including the national recognition we’ve had from DEFRA and from the government minister for farming and food security.

Shanaz Gulzar the creative director for BD25, gave an eloquent speech on the link between food and culture, and the key role that social eating has for families across the district.

Professor Tim Lang gave a brilliant, pre-recorded speech for the partnership on food system resilience, and highlighted the fundamental role that “we/us” play in fixing our food system, it’s not down to one person or organisation, but we all play a role.

The event ended with a great interactive workshop ‘Turning activism into action!” with Leon Ballin national partnership manager for Sustainable Food Places.

We would like to thank everyone that attended, the team that facilitated the day, the teams at Fruit Works, Grow To School and Penny Oaks School for providing seeds for growing and freshly squeezed juice from local surplus apples, and to the team at InnChurches for sourcing the locally produced food and refreshments, thank you all!
