Why is being a healthy weight important?
Obesity occurs when you eat and drink more than your body needs and don’t move enough. The modern environment makes it very difficult for us to maintain a healthy weight; for example unhealthy food and drinks are more easily available making it harder for us to resist temptation.
Being overweight is not just about how you look, it can have serious health implications. Obesity is linked to a range of health problems such as:
- Heart disease and stroke
- Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Breathlessness and sleep apnoea (snoring/disturbed sleep)
- Some cancers
- Fertility problems
- Joint and back pain
- Low mood and self esteem
Most people who need to lose weight can get health benefits from losing even a small amount (about 5%) of their weight if they keep it off. The best way to lose weight is to make small, realistic changes to your diet and increase your physical activity.
